The short version. Plainova helps you understand confusing official letters. To explain a letter, its photo is sent to our AI provider, which reads it and sends back a plain-language explanation. By default we do not keep your letter or its explanation. If you choose to save a letter, it is encrypted on your device with a key made from your password before it ever reaches us — so we cannot read your saved letters, and neither can anyone else who got hold of our systems. We never sell your data and never use your letters to train AI models.
This policy explains what Plainova ("we", "us") collects, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the Plainova mobile app and the services behind it.
When you scan a letter and ask Plainova to explain it, the letter's image is sent over an encrypted connection to our AI provider, Anthropic, which reads it and produces the plain-language explanation, deadline, checklist, and other results. This is necessary for the app to work — a letter cannot be explained without being read.
Anthropic processes the letter to generate your result and, under its API terms, does not use it to train AI models. Once your explanation is produced and returned to your phone, our servers do not keep a readable copy of your letter or its explanation. Most letters are read once and never stored at all.
If you decide to save a letter inside the app, your phone encrypts it using a key derived from your password before it is sent to us. We store only the encrypted result. Because the key comes from your password, which we never receive, we cannot decrypt or read your saved letters, and neither could anyone who obtained a copy of our database. One consequence: if you forget your password, we cannot recover your saved letters for you.
If you ask a follow-up question about a letter, or translate it into another language, the relevant letter text is sent to our AI provider to answer or translate it, in the same way and under the same terms described above.
We share the minimum necessary with providers who help run Plainova:
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use your letters for advertising, and we do not use your letters to train AI models.
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. You can ask us to delete your account and all associated data at any time — email support@plainova.app and we will delete it within 30 days. See plainova.app/delete-account for details. You may also contact us to request access to or correction of your personal information.
Connections between the app and our servers are encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. Saved letters are encrypted on your device with a key we never receive. No system is perfectly secure, but Plainova is designed so that the most sensitive thing — the contents of your letters — is not something we can read.
Plainova is not directed to children and is not intended for use by children under 13.
Plainova is operated from Canada, and the providers above may process data in the United States and other countries. By using Plainova you understand your information may be processed in these locations.
If we make material changes, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
